What you will study

To complete the Master of Applied Economics, you must complete 160 credit points. Depending on your prior experience and previous studies, you may be able to complete your degree in less time.

Foundation Zone. Essential Units (40 credit points). Complete each unit below.

  • Principles of Finance (10 credit points)
  • Econometrics and Business Statistics (10 credit points)
  • Economics for Professionals (10 credit points)
  • Work, Organisation and Management (10 credit points)

Core Zone. Total: 80 credit points. This zone consists of all the compulsory requirements for the degree.

  • Essential Units (30 credit points): Complete each unit below.
    • Applied Topics in Microeconomics (10 credit points)
    • Applied Economics Project (10 credit points)
    • Applied Econometrics (10 credit points)
  • Elective Units (50 credit points): Complete 50 credit points from the following options.
    • Applied Topics in Macroeconomics (10 credit points)
    • Health Economics and Policy (10 credit points)
    • Climate Change, Energy and Environmental Economics (10 credit points)
    • International Trade (10 credit points)
    • Economic Development (10 credit points)
    • Economics of Public Issues (10 credit points)
    • Techniques in Business Analytics (10 credit points)
    • International Financial Management (10 credit points)

Flexible Zone. Total: 40 credit points. This zone allows you to either gain more depth in your chosen area of study or explore other areas of interest.

  • You can use your flexible zone to enrol in any 8000-level postgraduate unit for which you meet the prerequisites.

Entry requirements

Depending on your prior qualifications, work experience, or other recognised prior learning, you may qualify for entry to this degree at various admission points.

2 years 

  • If you hold an AQF level 7 bachelor's qualification or recognised equivalent, you will need to complete the Foundation Zone, Core Zone, and Flexible Zone (160 credit points). 

1.5 years 

  • If you hold an AQF level 7 bachelor's qualification or recognised equivalent with a WAM of 65 or higher, or a minimum WAM of 60 together with a GMAT score of 600 or higher, you will need to complete the Core Zone and Foundation Zone (120 credit points).
  • If you hold an AQF level 7 bachelor's qualification in a related field or recognised equivalent, or an AQF level 7 bachelor's qualification or recognised equivalent and a minimum of two years relevant approved work experience, professional certification, or other recognised prior learning, you will need to complete the Core Zone and Flexible Zone (120 credit points). 

1 year 

  • If you hold an AQF level 8 bachelor honours or graduate diploma qualification in a related field or recognised equivalent, or meet two of the following three criteria, you will need to complete the Core Zone (80 credit points):
    • AQF level 7 bachelor's qualification in a related field or recognised equivalent
    • Minimum two years relevant approved work experience, professional certification, or other recognised prior learning
    • AQF level 7 bachelor's qualification or recognised equivalent with a WAM of 65 or higher, or a minimum WAM of 60 together with a GMAT score of 600 or higher.

Recognition of Prior Learning

With recognition of prior learning (RPL), you could get credit for your prior study and experience, reducing the duration of your studies. Credit is awarded for formal and informal or non-formal learning. You’ll need to apply for RPL once you receive your offer to study at Macquarie.

Estimated first-year tuition fee in 2024: $31,900 (full-fee paying place)

All costs are calculated using current rates and are based on a study load of 40 credit points (normally four units) per semester or 80 credit points (normally eight units) per year.

A student’s annual fee may vary in accordance with:
