Course Overview
The Melbourne Business School's Master of International Business will equip you with effective management skills for the international business sector.
Your knowledge and understanding will be developed through in-depth learning in areas such as strategic management, corporate governance in a global context, cross-cultural impacts and marketing in an international space.
This program is for graduates who wish to establish a management career in international business, and who aim to develop a sound understanding of the policies governing the world trade and investment system, with a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific region.

200 point program
The 200 Point Master of International Business consists of 16 subjects comprising:
- Four foundation subjects.
- Two core subjects.
- Five discipline core.
- Three elective subjects.
- Two capstone subjects.
150 point program
Students entering the Master of International Business with 50 points of advanced standing will need to successfully complete 12 x 12.5 point subjects comprising:
- Two core subjects.
- Five discipline core.
- Three elective subjects.
- Two capstone subjects.
Dual Degree Program
A limited number of places are available annually to high-achieving Master of International Business students. Eligible students who successfully complete a dual degree program will graduate with the Master of International Business from the University of Melbourne and either the MSc Marketing Management from Bocconi or the MSc Global Supply Chain Management from HEC Montreal.
It will take a student enrolled in the 150 point Master of International Business program, two years of full-time study to graduate with both qualifications (one year at Melbourne, one year at the partner institution).
It will take a student enrolled in the 200 point Master of International Business program, two and a half years of full-time study to graduate with both qualifications (one and a half years at Melbourne, one year at the partner institution).
Students must complete all THREE of the following subjects as well as ONE subject from the Selective group:
- Business Analysis and Decision Making
- Management Competencies
- Managing for Value Creation
Selective group
Complete ONE of the following:
- Fundamental of Finance
- Fundamentals in Accounting
- Managerial Economics

Academic requirements
To be considered for entry into this course, you must have completed an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in any discipline.
English language requirements
All applicants to the University of Melbourne must satisfy the English language requirements. This may be achieved in a number of ways, including recognised previous study taught and assessed entirely in English or an approved English language test.
If you are from a non-English speaking background, the required standard of English for this degree is one of the following English proficiency test scores:
- IELTS (Academic) – 7.0 overall, with no band less than 6.5.
- TOEFL IBT – minimum score of 94, with writing 24; speaking 20; reading 19; listening 20.
- PTE – minimum score of 72, with written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 64.
- Cambridge – minimum score of 185, with no skill less than 176.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Prior studies may be credited towards your degree and potentially reduce the duration of your course. This is known as Advanced Standing (also known as credit or recognition of prior learning).
If you have an undergraduate degree in business/commerce or a related discipline, you may be awarded up to 50 points of Advanced Standing.
There is a pre-approved Advanced Standing arrangement for students who complete the Graduate Certificate of Business prior to commencing this master's program. To receive maximum Advanced Standing (credit) to enter the 150 point program, you must undertake the following subjects within the Graduate Certificate of Business:

- MKTG90038 MKTG Value Creation Strategies

Commonwealth Supported Places
The Australian Government allocates a certain number of CSPs to the universities each year, which are then distributed to students based on merit.
If you're a Commonwealth Supported Student (CSS), you'll only need to pay a portion of your tuition fees. This is known as the student contribution amount – the balance once the government subsidy is applied. This means your costs are much lower.
Limited CSP spaces are offered to students enrolled in selected postgraduate courses.
Your student contribution amount is:
- Calculated per unit you're enrolled in.
- Dependent on the study areas they relate to.
- Reviewed and adjusted each year.
HECS-HELP loans are available to CSP students to pay the student contribution amount.
FEE-HELP loans are available to assist eligible full-fee paying domestic students with the cost of a university course.
