Course overview

The RMIT University Design Thinking course encourages students to think differently and develop the skills needed to apply a new mindset within organisations. Supported by industry experts, personal mentors and weekly Q and As, students will learn techniques that help solve the right problem in the right way while understanding the customer perspective.

Throughout the course, students will work on their own problem and complete a Design Thinking project that can be presented to their organisation, start-up or peers.

Introduction to Design Thinking

  • Explore the fundamentals of design thinking and the Double Diamond framework.
  • Identify the qualities of a design thinker and activate your design thinking mindset.
  • Discuss your design thinking journey and place yourself on the design thinking continuum.
  • Identify your own design challenge to explore throughout the course.

How you will learn

Throughout the course, students will work on their own problem statement and complete a design thinking project that they will pitch to a mentor. Students will explain their design thinking solution and the process that guided their findings. They will also be able to take the project back to their organisation, start-up or peers for presentation and application.

  • Apply empathy frameworks to develop customer personas.
  • Use informed data collection for customer insights.
  • Examine customers’ pain and gain points to identify key opportunities.
  • Generate possible solutions and assess their viability based on user research.

  • Establish iterative processes to improve business outcomes.
  • Design and implement solutions that address real user needs and challenges.
