Course Overview

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is designed for experienced professionals with ambition and drive who wish to develop responsible and sustainable leadership skills. Throughout this degree, you will gain a holistic and strategic business point-of-view which is required to operate effectively in an increasingly competitive and changing global business world.

In this course, students are able to integrate advanced knowledge of recent developments in business disciplines and professional practice, analyse real-world business situations, and create innovative, sustainable and judicious solutions to such challenges. What you will study

The MBA requires the successful completion of 72 credit points (CP) including 60 CP of core subjects and 12 CP of electives. Each subject is valued at six CP.

Electives

Students must complete 12 CP of 900 level elective subjects from subjects offered from the Sydney Business School within the Faculty of Business and Law. Students may consult with the Academic Program Director to aid with selection of elective subjects.

Academic requirements

To be considered for this course, students must have one of the following:

  • Recognised bachelor's degree with an equivalent average mark of at least 50 per cent, plus a minimum of three years’ relevant full-time professional or managerial experience, or part-time equivalent.
  • A recognised graduate diploma or graduate certificate, together with a minimum of five years' full-time relevant professional or managerial experience, or part-time equivalent.
  • Full membership of a qualifying professional body, together with a minimum of five years' full-time relevant professional or managerial experience, or part-time equivalent.
  • If candidates do not hold tertiary qualifications, the Academic Program Director may accept candidates with substantial and proven managerial and/or entrepreneurial experience who demonstrate the potential to meet the learning requirements of the MBA. The university considers each case holistically on its individual merits.

English language requirements

For international students, the following level of English is required to gain admission to this program:

  • IELTS Academic: Overall score of 6.5, with reading 6.0, writing 6.0, listening 6.0 and speaking 6.0.
  • TOEFL (Internet-based): Overall score of 86, with reading 18, writing 18, listening 17 and speaking 17.
  • UOW College's English for Tertiary Studies: Credit (weighted average mark of 65 overall and minimum 50 in Academic Reading and Writing)

Recognition of Prior Learning

Approved articulation arrangements between various courses are in place. Students who successfully completed a postgraduate qualification in business from another university will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Members of selected organisations who meet specified criteria for each may be given credit towards the MBA. The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) offers exemptions for the Master of Business Administration.

Commonwealth Supported Places

The Australian Government allocates a certain number of CSPs to the universities each year, which are then distributed to students based on merit.

If you're a Commonwealth Supported Student (CSS), you'll only need to pay a portion of your tuition fees. This is known as the student contribution amount – the balance once the government subsidy is applied. This means your costs are much lower.

Limited CSP spaces are offered to students enrolled in selected postgraduate courses.

Your student contribution amount is:

  • Calculated per unit you're enrolled in.
  • Dependent on the study areas they relate to.
  • Reviewed and adjusted each year.

HECS-HELP loans are available to CSP students to pay the student contribution amount.
