Graduate Certificate of Artificial Intelligence

  • Delivery: Face to Face
  • Study Level: Postgraduate
  • Duration: 6 months
  • Course Type: Graduate Certificate

Gain practical AI and machine learning capabilities to design, evaluate and apply intelligent software solutions while preparing for further postgraduate study in applied artificial intelligence.

Course overview

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how organisations analyse information, automate processes and develop technology-enabled solutions. Deakin University’s Graduate Certificate of Artificial Intelligence helps information technology professionals strengthen their foundational knowledge and practical capabilities in this rapidly evolving field.

You will examine machine learning and the mathematical principles that underpin artificial intelligence. Through your choice of electives, you can extend your learning into areas such as AI engineering, human-aligned artificial intelligence or professional practice in information technology. Weekly workshops and practical learning activities give you experience working with AI technologies and developing software that responds to industry needs. Deakin’s research expertise informs the curriculum, helping you engage with current methods, tools and professional expectations.

Delivered at Deakin’s Waurn Ponds campus, the course comprises four credit points and can be completed in six months of full-time study or the part-time equivalent. After graduating, you may use the completed credit points towards the Master of Applied Artificial Intelligence or Master of Applied Artificial Intelligence (Professional).

CSP Subsidised Fees Available

This program has a limited quota of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). The indicative CSP price is calculated based on first year fees for EFT. The actual fee may vary if there are choices in electives or majors.

Entry requirements

Academic requirements

To be eligible for this course, applicants must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in a related discipline.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in any discipline and have at least two years of relevant work experience, or the part-time equivalent.

Related disciplines and relevant professional experience include areas within the broad field of information technology. Meeting the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee admission.

English language requirements

Applicants must provide evidence of English language proficiency through at least one accepted option, including:

  • A bachelor’s degree completed in a recognised English-speaking country
  • IELTS Academic: overall score of 6.5, with no band score below 6.0
  • An approved equivalent English language qualification or pathway

Other approved qualifications and pathways may also be used to meet Deakin’s English language requirements. Contact the university for further information.

Recognition of Prior Learning

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previously studied or have relevant work experience. This will help reduce the number of units you need to study to finish your course.
Students are generally required to complete at least one-third of their course or 4 credit points at Deakin, whichever is greater. As an exception to this standard requirement, students enrolled in a certificate, including a graduate certificate, must complete at least 2 credit points at Deakin. Applications are assessed individually by Deakin University.

Fees and CSP

Indicative annual fee in 2027: $4,433 (Commonwealth Supported Place)

All costs are calculated using current rates and are based on a study load of 16 units (normally eight units) per year.

Student fees may vary in accordance with:

  • The number of courses studied per term.
  • The choice of major or specialisation.
  • Choice of courses.
  • Credit from previous study or work experience.
  • Eligibility for government-funded loans.

You may also need to pay the student services and amenities fee.

Student fees shown are subject to change. Contact the university directly to confirm.

Commonwealth Supported Places

The Australian Government allocates a certain number of CSPs to the universities each year, which are then distributed to students based on merit.

If you're a Commonwealth Supported Student (CSS), you'll only need to pay a portion of your tuition fees. This is known as the student contribution amount – the balance once the government subsidy is applied. This means your costs are much lower.

Limited CSP spaces are offered to students enrolled in selected postgraduate courses.

Your student contribution amount is:

  • Calculated per the course you're enrolled in.
  • Dependent on the study areas they relate to.
  • Reviewed and adjusted each year.

HECS-HELP loans are available to CSP students to pay the student contribution amount.
