Unsurprisingly, a good workplace atmosphere takes the top spot (54 per cent of respondents) among what job seekers value beyond salary in the Hays Salary Guide. When you are spending a good portion of your week at work, you want to be in an environment that makes you feel welcomed, valued, supported and happy.

A good workplace culture also helps retain employees. As per the Great Place to Work 2025 report, when trust and psychological safety are strong, 91 per cent of employees say they would stay long-term, compared to 83 per cent at typical workplaces.

Valued employee benefits

Benefits are a huge part of what makes or breaks working at a company. With the cost of living hitting harder and average salary increases falling below employee expectations, benefits are a way for employers to soften the blow and incentivise employees.

The most valued employee benefits? According to the Hays Salary Guide, flexible working is the highest valued employee benefit (58 per cent) followed by additional annual leave (45 per cent) and insurance assistance (17 per cent).

Competent leadership

Leaders play a significant role in making a company a great place to work. When leaders lead by example and hold themselves to the same standards they expect of others, that culture flows through the entire organisation. According to the Great Place to Work 2025 report, out of the employees working for companies ranked in the Best Workplaces list:

  • 97 per cent say their leaders’ actions match their words
  • 95 per cent find their leaders approachable and easy to talk with
  • 96 per cent say leadership makes people look forward to coming to work

The impact of the above:

  • 91 per cent want to work there long-term (versus 56 per cent in typical companies)
  • 94 per cent recommend their company to others (versus 54 per cent in typical companies)
  • 93 per cent look forward to work (versus 47 per cent in typical companies)

Career development opportunities

According to the Hays Salary Guide, 34 per cent of employees value career development initiatives beyond salary, ranking it higher than job security (29 per cent) and remote work (24 per cent). Companies that are willing to invest in their employees through initiatives such as career development programs, mentorship and study support are more likely to be viewed as a great place to work.

Methodology

To determine whether a company makes the rankings, Great Place to Work Australia uses a confidential employee engagement survey called The Trust Index Survey. The survey measures key areas of the employee experience including credibility, trust, pride and camaraderie. In addition to the survey, the organisation’s human resources team must also complete a Culture Brief, a short questionnaire covering the history and demographics of the business.

To become Great Place to Work certified, an organisation must have more than 10 employees and achieve an overall Trust Index score of 65 per cent or higher. Certification signifies that the company has created a work environment that fosters trust, fairness, respect and camaraderie among employees. 

Hilton (88 per cent of employees say it is a great place to work)

People working at the Hilton describe it as a fun workplace with great staff benefits, strong leadership and a positive work culture.

Hilton is one of the world’s largest hospitality companies, with a portfolio spanning 27 brands across 143 countries and territories. Be your authentic self

Authenticity should apply not just during your interview, but throughout the entire application process, starting with your resume and cover letter. While it’s fine to use AI to help with bits and pieces of your application, it’s important to ensure that what you submit reflects your unique skills, strengths and experience.
