Telekom Malaysia founded Multimedia University (MMU) in 1994 with the goal of producing skilled graduates in information technology and telecommunications. Initially known as the Institute of Telecommunication and Information Technology, the institution was renamed Universiti Telekom in 1996 and became Multimedia University in 1999.
MMU is Malaysia's first private university, having been granted university status by the Ministry of Higher Education in 1996. The university’s Cyberjaya campus was initially established to provide Malaysia’s tech hub, the Multimedia Super Corridor, with capable IT specialists, engineers and other knowledge workers.
Since then, the university has expanded its suite of accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to include business, accounting and marketing. Today, MMU delivers a broad scope of courses at its campuses in Cyberjaya and Melaka, as well as through open and distance learning platforms.
