Founded in January 1997, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) offers industry-relevant undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in engineering, energy management, geoscience and technology. The university, a subsidiary of the national oil corporation PETRONAS, aims to cultivate the country’s next generation of leaders in science and technology, particularly in the oil and gas sector.

UTP’s emphasis on the sciences has yielded significant results. The university's 1,000-acre campus in Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak, has produced over 24,000 engineering, science and technology graduates. In addition to being well-versed in technology and innovation, UTP graduates are also equipped with leadership and management skills.
 

UTP rankings and achievements

UTP is ranked #16 in the QS Asian University Rankings - South Eastern Asia 2024 and #307 in the QS World University Rankings 2024. The university also occupies the #79 spot in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2023.

Professional accreditations

UTP has attained programme accreditations from international bodies such as the Institute of Asset Management (IAM) and the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Geological Society.

Awards and recognitions

The accolades are starting to pile up in recognition of the university’s research work. At the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Achievement Awards 2020, one of UTP’s associate professors from its Centre for Intelligent Signal and Imaging Research was awarded the Mountbatten Medal for their contributions to neurotechnology advancement and its application in mental healthcare.

The same year, the university earned a six-star Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA) rating from the Ministry of Education. The institution was commended for its research studies and facilities.

Academic and industry partnerships

UTP has formed connections with universities around the world. Some of its prominent academic partners include France’s University of Burgundy and India’s Shiri Guru Gobind Singhji Institute of Engineering and Technology. The institution also maintains research agreements with international organisations like Hitachi in Japan.

UTP students have the opportunity to engage in joint research projects, exchange programmes and facility-sharing initiatives with these global institutions and corporations.

UTP admission requirements and process

To enrol in Universiti Teknologi Petronas courses, you must meet one of the following in the criteria list below:

Bachelor in Business Management (Honours)

  • Diploma in a relevant field from a recognised institution with a minimum final CGPA of 2.00 and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics; OR
  • Matriculation/foundation in a relevant field from a recognised institution with a minimum final CGPA of 2.00 and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics; OR
  • A-Level or other equivalent qualification with at least a grade C in mathematics and two non-language subjects and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics; OR
  • ​STPM with a minimum of grade C in three subjects and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics; OR
  • ​International Baccalaureate (IB) with a minimum of Point 4 in mathematics and two other subjects and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics; OR
  • UEC - Senior Middle Level (SML) with a minimum of grade B in mathematics, English and three other subjects and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics; OR
  • ​Australian matriculation programme with a minimum of grade C (or 60 per cent) in mathematics/specialised mathematics and two other subjects and at least a grade C in SPM mathematics 

Master’s degrees by coursework

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 or an equivalent qualification from a recognised university; OR
  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree with a CGPA between 2.00 and 2.49 can be admitted, subject to passing UTP’s rigorous internal assessment; OR
  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree from a non-business discipline must undergo prerequisite courses​ in business; OR
  • Candidates with an APEL A certificate (APEL T-7) are eligible for admission

Master’s degrees by research

  • Bachelor of Science in a business studies discipline with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 or equivalent in a relevant field from a recognised university; OR
  • Candidates with a Bachelor of Science in a business studies discipline with a CGPA between 2.50 and 2.74​ can be admitted and must pass UTP’s rigorous internal assessment; OR
  • Candidates with a Bachelor of Science in a business studies discipline with a CGPA between 2.00 and 2.49​ can be admitted and must have five years of work experience and pass UTP’s rigorous internal assessment; OR
  • Candidates with an APEL A certificate (APEL T-7) are eligible for admission

PhDs by research

  • Master’s degree (MQA, level 7) in a relevant field or its equivalent from a recognised university

Please note that these general admission requirements apply to most courses offered at the university. 

UTP 2024 intake dates

For a smooth enrolment experience, plan ahead based on the university’s 2024 intake dates. This will give you ample time to sort out your fee payment and study schedule.

  • Bachelor’s degrees: January, May, September
  • Master’s degree by coursework: January, May, September
  • Master’s degree by Open and Distance Learning and coursework: May, September
  • PhDs by research: January, July

UTP enrolment process 

You can apply for your chosen course online. 

Undergraduate online application process: 

  1. Prepare scanned copies of the following documents in PDF format to be uploaded during the online application process:
    • Your identity card/MyKad
    • Academic result transcripts for STPM, A-Level, international baccalaureate, diploma, foundation, matriculation or other equivalent qualifications
    • English language proficiency certificate (SPM, MUET, IELTS, etc.)
    • A non-refundable RM50 processing fee via internet banking/cash deposit/electronic fund transfer/telegraphic transfer and your proof of payment
  2. Login to the UTP online application platform. 
  3. For the Programme Selection section, you are required to choose three programmes according to your preference.
  4. For the Academic Qualification section, you are required to submit all related information, including your grades/CGPA for each subject in STPM, A-Level, IB, diploma, foundation or matriculation.
  5. Click the SUBMIT button to complete your online application. You will receive a confirmation notification message and an application reference number via email.
  6. The university’s enrolment department will reach out to update you on your application status and share payment information.

Postgraduate online application process:

  1. Prepare scanned copies of the following documents in PDF format to be uploaded during the online application process:
    • Identity card for Malaysians or passport for non-Malaysians
    • Front-facing passport-size photo (jpeg/gif format with a white background; size: 45mm high and 35mm wide)
    • Complete academic transcript and master’s/PhD degree scroll (an official translation in English is required if the transcript is in another language)
    • Research proposal (for research programmes only)
    • English language proficiency certificate (TOEFL, MUET, IELTS, etc.)
    • Sponsorship letter (if any)/financial guarantee (proof of your financial ability to cover the whole duration of your study)
    • Any other relevant documents to support your application
    • An RM50 processing fee via internet banking/cash deposit/electronic fund transfer/telegraphic transfer and your proof of payment
  2. Login to the UTP online application platform.
  3. Once you have entered your details and uploaded all the documents required, go to the Programme tab and select your course.
  4. Click the APPLY button to submit your online application. You will receive a confirmation notification message and an application reference number via email. 
  5. The university’s enrolment department will reach out to update you on your application status and share payment information.

UTP registration fees

When applying for your preferred programme, you are required to pay a one-off registration fee. International students will also have to pay for other admission costs.

Undergraduate (local students)

  • Registration: RM1,300

Postgraduate (local students)

  • Registration: RM1,300

Undergraduate (international students)

  • Application/processing fee: USD 50
  • Registration: RM5,000
  • Personal bond (refundable): RM3,250

UTP scholarships and financial aid

The university offers scholarships to eligible students through its Yayasan UTP scholarship programmes. Besides scholarships, here are additional financing options:

  • Study loan from the Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN)
  • Funds withdrawal from your Employees Provident Fund (EPF) Account 2
  • Bank loans

University scholarships

Yayasan UTP Prestigious Scholarship (postgraduate)
This scholarship is granted to master’s degree and PhD students who have excelled academically and demonstrated exceptional leadership and civic consciousness through extra-curricular activities and community service.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you’ll have to fulfil the criteria below:

  • Be a Malaysian citizen
  • Not be a recipient of any other scholarship
  • Obtained a minimum CGPA of 3.25 in your bachelor's degree and a minimum CGPA of 3.25 (coursework/mix mode) or at least one published article in a peer-reviewed journal (research mode) for your master's degree
  • Demonstrate regular involvement in extra-curricular activities such as team or individual sports, voluntary service and affiliations with recognised associations/societies, as well as special achievements in academics, social work or similar contributions
  • Possess a strong appreciation and appetite for current affairs (i.e. general knowledge of Malaysia's constitutional and legal framework, economic levers, government initiatives and nation-building philosophies)

Yayasan UTP Scholarship (undergraduate)
Foundation and bachelor’s degree students who achieve remarkable academic results and exhibit leadership qualities and civic consciousness through extra-curricular activities and community service are eligible for this scholarship.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must fulfil the criteria below:

  • Be a Malaysian citizen
  • Achieved straight As in SPM
  • Belong to a household with a monthly income of RM4,000 or below
  • Demonstrate regular involvement in extra-curricular activities

Applications must be submitted via the PETRONAS Education Sponsorship portal. Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview. 

Yayasan UTP Education Grant
This financial assistance programme supports outstanding students from low to middle-income families by financing their tuition fees.

Successful applicants will receive:

  • Sponsorship for up to five years of study
  • Full tuition fee coverage (up to RM100,000)/partial tuition fee coverage (up to RM50,000)

To be eligible for this scholarship, you’ll have to fulfil the criteria below:

  • Be a Malaysian citizen
  • Current UTP student
  • Not a holder of any other scholarship 
  • Aged between 17 and 21 years old
  • Belong to a household with a monthly income of not more than RM10,000
  • Attain a specific grade or CGPA in SPM, O-Level, matriculation courses, foundation courses, STPM, A-Level, International Baccalaureate or diploma courses
  • Have successfully completed the Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA), Cambridge Personal Styles Questionnaires (CPSQ) and Verbal Communication Assessment (VCA)
  • Possess strong leadership skills

Bursary (student support fund)
The Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Student Support Fund provides one-off financial assistance to students in need.

To be eligible for this financial aid, you must fulfil the criteria below:

  • Be a Malaysian citizen
  • Have completed at least one semester of study at UTP
  • Possess a good disciplinary record
  • Obtained a minimum GPA of 2.75 in the past semester

The Student Support Fund is open to PTPTN or self-sponsored students only. Each student is entitled to one financial assistance award for their entire study period at UTP. Application for this fund must be made through the UTP Centre for Student Experience.
