How to become an accountant

Accounting plays a vital role in improving an organisation’s financial health. Learn how you can start your career as an accountant in Malaysia.

hero_image

Accountants support an organisation’s growth by monitoring its financial transactions and performance. Many companies need them to manage their economic resources effectively. This makes accounting a highly versatile career as accountants can find employment across various sectors.

This profession is also in high demand in Malaysia. According to the Job Market Insights Fourth Quarter 2023 report released by the Institute of Labour Market Information and Analysis, accounting and auditing were ranked in the top five most popular jobs, with 18,025 job vacancies.

Many accounting roles for graduates, such as accounts assistant, bookkeeper and accounts clerk, require at least a diploma. You can pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree in this field for more advanced career prospects and earning potential. However, to be a practising accountant, you need to become certified by a professional accounting organisation.

Read further to explore what an accountant does, how to become one, what skills are important in this role and more.

What is an accountant?

An accountant collects, reports and analyses financial data to help an organisation make informed business decisions. They also conduct financial audits, reconcile accounts, and ensure all information is accurate and complies with legal guidelines.

While an accountant performs many tasks independently, their job still requires them to interact with others inside and outside of their company. They may work with coworkers, company executives and clients to complete projects. They also work with managers to report on the company’s financial performance and assist in developing strategies to improve it.

You can usually find accountants working in government agencies and private companies. Some accountants also set up their own accounting firms. As most organisations require these finance professionals, accountants have the opportunity to work in various industries ranging from business, finance and government.

What does an accountant do?

An accountant performs various tasks depending on their role and where they work. Some of their responsibilities may include:

  • preparing and analysing financial reports and statements
  • making sure that financial and tax procedures comply with the law
  • handling accounting procedures such as invoicing, billing and calculating payrolls
  • reconciling financial records such as bank statements, receipts and invoices
  • identifying and settling discrepancies in financial data
  • performing audits on financial records periodically
  • ensuring the organisation’s expenditure stays within the allocated budget

4 steps to becoming an accountant in Malaysia

You can refer to this guide to get a general idea of your journey in becoming an accountant in Malaysia:

  1. Obtain an undergraduate degree

With your Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) qualification or equivalent, you can pursue a Diploma in Accounting. The programme typically takes two to two and a half years of study.

You can also enrol in a related pre-university programme, which may take you one to two years. After completing the course, you can study a bachelor’s degree in accounting, which usually takes three to five years to complete.

While there are accounting roles that only require a diploma qualification, having a bachelor’s degree can expose you to higher-paying career opportunities. You can also specialise in different areas according to your interest, such as finance, actuarial science and fintech.

  2. Gain at least three years of relevant work experience

Practical work experience in an accounting role is crucial, especially when pursuing accounting as a long-term career. To become a certified accountant, you must be a member of an established professional accounting body, and most of these organisations require at least three years of approved work experience as a prerequisite.
  3. Apply to become a member of a professional accounting body

According to the Accountants Act 1967, you need to be certified by a professional accounting body to offer services as an accountant. To become a certified accountant in Malaysia, you must be a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA), the regulatory body of the professional qualification. If you are a member of another professional accounting organisation, you still need to register for an MIA membership.

Some well-known professional bodies in this field include the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA), and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

Professional accounting organisations have varying requirements for you to gain membership and certification, such as passing examinations, completing modules and having practical work experience.

Some accounting courses from Malaysian universities offer exam exemptions when you complete your studies, helping you shorten your journey to becoming a member.

A professional qualification can provide you with more career opportunities, as it serves as evidence of your accounting expertise to prospective employers and clients.

  4. Pursue a postgraduate degree

Build upon the fundamental accounting skills and knowledge gained from your undergraduate degree and upgrade them further by pursuing a postgraduate degree, such as a Master of Accounting or a Doctor of Philosophy in Accounting. Some students opt for a postgraduate qualification right after completing their undergraduate studies, while others work in the industry before returning to study. The typical duration of a postgraduate accounting degree is one to three years.

You can find postgraduate courses that offer examination exemptions for selected professional accounting bodies as well.

Having a postgraduate degree gives you a competitive edge in the job market and can also help you as a working professional to move up within your field into senior managerial roles.
